Sons And Lovers: An Extraordinary Story

With the advent of online mediums like Mediakee, getting access to a variety of books has become easier than ever. Some writers of the older era were not afraid of exploring certain themes even though the concept might scandalize the readers and critics alike. Such books received flak when they were initially published but later on became to be major literary milestones. One such book is Sons And Lovers by D.H. Lawrence.

While this novel initially incited a lukewarm critical reception, along with allegations of obscenity, it is at present regarded as a masterpiece of English literature. The first half of the novel describes Mrs. Morel's unhappy marriage, she is married to a miner, she has many arguments with him and sometimes her husband even resorts to physical violence. Although Mrs. Morel takes comfort in her children, the eldest child William is her favorite. She gets really upset when he takes up a job in London and moves away from family. When he dies of sickness, she is shattered and does not pay any attention towards her other children.

But eventually, when Paul catches pneumonia, she realizes her love for her second son. From that point onwards her life revolves around him. But conflict is inevitable when Paul seeks to escape his mother's suffocating grasp through relationships with women his own age. Set in Lawrence's native Nottinghamshire, Sons And Lovers is a highly autobiographical and compelling portrayal of childhood, adolescence and the clash of generations.
